2021 saw the lowest spend on transfer fees in 5 years despite 2nd highest number of transfers
According to FIFA’s Global Transfer Report for 2021, total global transfer fees declined for the second year in a row with $4.9bn spent in 2021 compared to $5.6bn in 2020.
While 2021 recorded only 12 fewer transfers than 2019’s peak – after a significant fall in 2020 – the associated transfer fees fell by $770 million. This reflected the increased bargaining power of buying clubs as given the weakened financial position of many selling clubs due to reduced incomes as a result of the impact of Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.
